These days, we’ve been keeping busy by re-thinking the entire Taiwanted.com Classifieds Ads website. We are looking to do a fresh start, and find ways to simplify things. We also want to make it as accessible to the Mandarin speaking community as it is to the English speaking community.
Could you help us translate the site’s language set into Mandarin? I’ve created an “open” Google spreadsheet, which you can edit. It lists the words that our software uses. I am hoping you will find this both a worthwhile group effort and an interesting challenge for your translation skills.
You can edit the spreadsheet here: http://flob.tw/taiwantedtranslation
If you would like credit for your work, just drop us a line at admin (at) forumosa (dot) com – we’ll create a links page on Taiwanted to recognize all of you who help us put together another useful website for Taiwan.
Be well,
gus.

Flags, emblems, badges and logos can now be added to your profile. To add one to your posting ID area (next to your posts) and your Forumosa profile, visit the UCP (User Control Pane; shortcut: www.flob.tw/ucpprofile) — a “flag” option has been added
If you would like add a flag to use on the site, post an image of the flag below or in our feedback forum. Remember, the flag will ultimately be only 30×30 pixels in size.

Safe to come out

“I didn’t fail the test, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong” – Benjamin Franklin
My latest attempt to upgrade the software didn’t work. I have asked the good folks at HostExpress to restore the site to our last Server-side Backup (hopefully it isn’t too late in the evening for them to get my request), and I’ll aim to try again tonight (Shanghai time)
This half of the software upgrade actually looked simpler than the first half. There were less file conflicts that resulted from the upgrade process. There are only a few modifications to our forums to date (RSS feeds, Advanced Quick Reply) and I thought the conflicts related to these were easily spotted and adjusted for. Next time around, I will try making all the adjustments to the conflicted files manually.
Wish me luck!

Since I finished the first half of the forum software upgrade this morning, I have been having trouble finding a stable connection to the Forumosa server. I can’t even make solid contact via FTP to upload files. I tried the same connection I used this morning at ElementFresh and then I tried to connect at the Wagas nearby. Early this morning, my traceroutes to the F Server and HostExpress confirmed that my home connection is too slow/unstable.
Connecting to the forums via my browser is just slow. It isn’t particularly fast to other sites, but it’s especially bad to the F server
I’ll play it safe and ask our webhost (HostExpress.com) to do a Server-side Backup so that a restoration of the server (if necessary) would go back to this point. Depending on how soon we can do the backup, I’ll attempt Part 2 of the software upgrade late tonight or early Tue morning

I took the website offline this morning around 6am (Shanghai/Taipei time) and have temporarily switched it back on for testing. Part 1 of the 2-part software upgrade seems to be stable. I’ve tested posting and replying, as well as PMing
Now I need to move to a new network because these guys are switching off their network for lunch. Aw shucks, there’s a cloud burst here in Shanghai! I always get caught out without an umbrella. Hopefully I’ll find an open network close by
